How to Identify and Prevent Drain Blockages

How to spot the early signs of a drain blockage and practical steps to prevent one, for homes and businesses across London and Essex.

Most drain blockages give some warning before they become a full emergency, and knowing what to look for can save you a lot of disruption.

Early warning signs

A blockage rarely appears out of nowhere. In most cases there are signs building for days or weeks beforehand that are easy to miss if you are not looking for them.

  • Water draining more slowly than usual from sinks, baths or showers
  • Gurgling sounds coming from pipes or the toilet
  • Unpleasant smells near drains, gullies or manhole covers
  • Water rising in an outside gully during rain
  • Toilets that need flushing more than once to clear

Common causes of blockages

Fats, oils and grease are among the most frequent culprits, building up gradually inside pipework until the diameter of the drain is severely reduced. Wet wipes, sanitary products and excess toilet paper cause similar problems, especially where they combine with grease to form a solid mass.

Outside, tree roots seeking moisture can find their way into ageing or slightly damaged pipework, while leaves and general debris often collect in gullies and gradually restrict flow.

Simple prevention habits

Small changes to everyday habits go a long way towards keeping drains clear.

  • Only flush the three Ps: pee, poo and paper
  • Dispose of fat, oil and grease in the bin, not the sink
  • Use sink strainers to catch food scraps and hair
  • Clear leaves and debris from outside gullies regularly
  • Avoid pouring large amounts of chemical cleaner down drains

When to call in a CCTV drain survey

If blockages keep recurring in the same spot despite regular clearing, a CCTV drain survey can identify the underlying cause, whether that is a structural defect, root ingress or a badly positioned joint, so it can be addressed properly rather than treated repeatedly.

This is particularly useful for landlords and commercial property managers who need clear evidence of the problem before authorising repair work.

Professional clearing methods

For blockages that will not clear with a plunger or household drain cleaner, high pressure jetting removes the obstruction along with any built up residue on the pipe walls, while drain descaling deals with more stubborn scale and grease deposits that ordinary jetting alone may not fully clear.
