How to keep your drains odour-free

Person pouring baking soda down drain. Why DIY Drain Cleaning Can Be Dangerous?

If you are having problems with a stinky drain, it is most probable that there is a buildup that requires immediate attention. Otherwise, you may be running the risk of either having slow drainage or a complete clog.

To tackle this problem, we have collected a few DIY hacks that will help your drains stay fresh and clean.

Baking soda and dish detergent

This is an effective and quick way to deodorise most types of drains. Simply pour one-quarter cup of baking soda into the drain, and then add some liquid dish detergent. Finish by flushing the drain with hot water for two minutes.

Boiling water and dish detergent

Fill a pot with water and leave it to boil. Turn off the heat and add some dish liquid detergent. Slowly pour half the mixture into the drain and wait a few minutes for the buildup to dissolve before pouring in the rest. Finish by running some cold water to melt any of the remaining residue.

Hot vinegar

Boil four cups of vinegar and then pour half of the liquid into the drain valve. Wait a minute before pouring in the rest of the liquid, then proceed to flush the pipes with cold water.

Baking soda and vinegar

The vinegar mixed with the baking soda will help to neutralise the odour. However, before adding any of these, run some hot water for a couple of minutes to soften any current buildup. After, add one or two cups of baking soda down the drain plug hole, followed by two cups of warm vinegar. Once it has reacted and foamed up, rinse it away by alternating hot and cold water rinses.

Salt and baking soda

Create a mixture of equal parts of salt and baking soda then stream it into the opening. After, flush it away with water.
