How to Keep Your Drains Odour Free

Practical tips to stop drains smelling in homes and commercial properties across London and Essex, and when to call in professional help.

A smelly drain is more than just unpleasant, it is usually a sign that something further down the system needs attention.

Why drains start to smell

Most drain odours come from trapped organic matter breaking down inside the pipe, whether that is food waste, grease, hair or general debris. As bacteria work on this material they release gases that travel back up through the pipework and into the room.

A dry trap, where the U-bend under a sink or in an outside gully has lost its water seal through evaporation or lack of use, can also let sewer gases escape directly into a room.

Quick checks you can do yourself

Before assuming the worst, it is worth ruling out the simple causes first.

  • Run water in rarely used sinks, showers and outside gullies to refill dry traps
  • Check that sink overflow holes are clear of grime
  • Clean visible debris from plugholes and drain covers
  • Check the seal around the toilet base for a hidden leak

When the smell points to something bigger

If the odour persists after these checks, particularly if it is strongest near an external manhole or a specific run of pipe, it is likely that grease, scale or debris has built up further along the drain than a household remedy can reach.

In commercial kitchens, a grease trap that has not been emptied recently is a very common cause of persistent smells, and our tanker services can deal with this quickly.

Professional cleaning options

High pressure jetting clears built up debris and residue from inside the pipe, removing the source of the smell rather than masking it. Drain descaling goes further, stripping away limescale and hardened grease that can trap odours even after a standard jetting.

For persistent or unexplained smells, a CCTV drain survey can pinpoint exactly where the problem lies, including any cracks or joint failures that might be letting gases escape.

Odour issues in commercial properties

Restaurants, offices and retail units cannot afford lingering drain smells affecting customers or staff, so a scheduled programme of jetting and descaling is often more cost effective than dealing with complaints as they arise.
