Products to Avoid Using to Protect Your Septic Tank

Protect your septic tank by avoiding these common household products that disrupt the natural breakdown process.

A septic tank relies on a careful biological balance, and certain everyday products can upset that balance far more than most people realise.

How a septic tank actually works

A septic tank breaks down waste using naturally occurring bacteria, separating solids from liquid before the treated water disperses into the drainage field. Anything that harms these bacteria, or that does not break down naturally, disrupts the whole process and can lead to backups or a full tank needing emptying sooner than expected.

Household chemicals that cause problems

Strong bleach, drain cleaners and antibacterial cleaning products are among the biggest culprits, as they kill the bacteria your septic tank depends on. Used occasionally in small amounts they are unlikely to cause serious harm, but regular or heavy use gradually reduces the tank's ability to break down waste properly.

  • Bleach and chlorine based cleaning products
  • Chemical drain unblockers
  • Antibacterial and antimicrobial soaps in large volumes
  • Fabric softener used excessively

Non biodegradable items

Wipes, sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds and dental floss should never be flushed into a septic system. These items do not break down and simply accumulate in the tank, taking up capacity and increasing the frequency of emptying needed.

Fats, oils and food waste

Cooking fats and oils solidify inside the tank and pipework, and food waste from a garbage disposal unit adds an unnecessary load to a system that is not designed to process large volumes of solids. Both increase the risk of blockages in the pipework leading to the tank.

Keeping your septic tank in good condition

Being mindful of what enters the system, along with regular emptying, keeps a septic tank working efficiently for years. Rapid Drainage Services provides tanker services for septic tank emptying and pump services across London and Essex, along with CCTV drain surveys if you suspect a problem with the pipework connected to your tank.
