Don't Let Drains Ruin Your Summer BBQ
Simple checks to keep outdoor drains clear before a garden gathering, from a London and Essex drainage company.
Garden gatherings put extra strain on outdoor drains, from grease going down the kitchen sink to guests using outside taps and toilets more than usual. A little preparation avoids an unwelcome surprise.
Check outside gullies before guests arrive
Outdoor gullies near patios and kitchens often collect leaves, grass cuttings and general debris that build up unnoticed between uses. A blocked gully can overflow quickly once you start washing up plates and glasses outdoors.
Clear any visible debris by hand and pour a bucket of water through to check it drains away freely.
Be careful with fat and marinades
Barbecue cooking produces far more fat and oil than a normal meal. Scrape grease from trays and utensils into the bin rather than rinsing it straight down an outside drain, where it sets hard just as it would indoors.
Watch guttering and downpipes
If a summer downpour catches your gathering out, blocked guttering or downpipes can send water straight into areas you would rather keep dry. A quick check for overflowing gutters ahead of time is worth the ten minutes it takes.
Extra toilet use
More guests means more strain on your household drains and toilet. If your drains already run slowly, a busy day of extra use is often when a partial blockage becomes a full one.
- Clear outdoor gullies before the day
- Bin fat and marinades rather than rinsing them away
- Check guttering and downpipes are clear
- Be mindful of extra toilet and sink use
