Mixing chemical cleaners
Combining different chemical drain cleaners, or mixing bleach with other household chemicals, can produce dangerous fumes. It is best to use one product at a time, follow the instructions closely, and never assume that more product means a stronger result.
Using the wrong tool for the job
A plunger designed for a sink is not the same shape as one designed for a toilet, and using the wrong type reduces the chance of forming a proper seal. Similarly, improvised tools such as wire coat hangers can scratch pipes or push debris further down rather than pulling it out.
Forcing a blockage that will not budge
If a plunger or drain snake makes no progress after several attempts, continuing to force it rarely helps and can occasionally damage the pipe or fitting. This is usually a sign that the blockage is further down the system than DIY tools can reach, or that there is a more serious underlying issue.
